AVATr
NHS Foundation Year junior doctors said about AVATr;
“Good scenarios which offered provocative discussions…Very helpful in identifying personal targets. Great use of technology and comparisons between various situations. Worthwhile analytical discussions”.
“Excellent scenarios, very good learning chance”.
“Valued the opportunity to practice dealing with difficult patients and scenarios that are directly relevant to working as a doctor”.
“Really useful topic to cover, and well thought out scenario. Lots of good discussion around consent, and helped build confidence... listening to others share some of their experiences of similar patients and how they managed them”.

Medical Simulation Training
|
Our award-winning partnership with Surrey and Borders NHS Trust involves the development of the AVATr (Augmented Virtual-reality Avatar in Training) Virtual Patient simulation system that uses virtual humans to train medical practitioners how to be better communicators with patients and colleagues.
Feedback from clinicians and Foundation Year junior doctors participating in this ongoing partnership with Surrey and Borders NHS Trust has been highly positive and has resulted in our being presented with an NHS award for 'Outstanding Contribution to Medical Education in Innovative Technology'. |
'Out-Of-Body' Experiences
|
AVATr utilises our virtual 'Out-Of-Body' system which features an innovative 'self-observational' approach that differs from the first-person perspective used in most virtual and augmented reality systems. Participants are able to view themselves immersed in a range of custom-designed scenarios interacting with virtual characters in real-time, from a unique third-person perspective.
This highly engaging effect is achieved through the combination of AI computer vision and novel interactive technologies to provide a more natural and versatile way of experiencing immersive media. Read more about the technology here. |

AVATr - Virtual Patient Difficult Conversation Simulator
|
TEL Friday have interviewed Consultant Psychiatrist Dr Amanda Redvers at Surrey and Borders NHS Trust about our AVATr Virtual Patient simulation system.
TEL Friday is an independant news channel broadcasting from Torbay Hospital in South Devon that covers all the latest developments in Technology Enhanced Learning in Medical Education. |
Experiential Learning
This innovative project aims to promote curiosity driven learning in order to build empathetic practice by giving learners a licence to fail and learn from their mistakes in a safe environment through using simulated high-stakes scenarios.
This has involved the development of a range of authentic virtual characters with believable personalities, diverse points of view, detailed back-stories, family backgrounds and medical histories, all taken from real-world scenarios.

Learning Outcomes
Participants in simulation sessions are able to meet virtual patients face-to-face using our immersive technology, enabling experiential learning in a wide range of simulated clinical situations.
This provides an invaluable opportunity for participants to develop and explore their communication skills with a focus on complex patient interactions, including how to talk to people with mental health conditions.
AVATr training sessions are carefully designed to help participants think about and experiment with their communication style and work out how to respond in challenging situations.
The AVATr package includes the provision of the following pre-produced simulation scenarios along with specialist consultancy and support services for the development of additional bespoke scenarios;
